Why everyone is wrong all the time
Lester Bangs: “That’s why I’d rather listen to Hank Williams or Beck, Bogert & Appice or Charlie Parker or the Royal Guardsmen. I have to say that the champions of the current New Wave ‘avant-garde’ are largely trendies, and I can guarantee you there will be no Throbbing Gristle repackages from Japan in the year 2000.” Uh…yes? Written in 1982.

Furthermore, I have this to say
Continuing on the subject of Songs, and specifically the one below, there’s this line: “I called you on the phone/but you’re not home.” This brings up a question. In fact, it brings up this question: How long can this lyrical trope keep existing in the cell phone-era? I mean, it’s 2009, and maybe she just wasn’t as crazy about you as you are about her, so she...

So, has the question been answered?
So this decade, this decade we call the Aughts (as such), started with a question: So then, at the end of this, has the question been answered? By an 80s pop star? Where are you Julian Casablancas? (yes I know all about the solo album…)

This is an important plea.
Now that GeoCities is going down tonight, we have one simple request: Someone, somewhere, save the Orlando page Passive Soul! The people of the future must be able to access this information! How will they ever know about Romo?

Mainly because he is absolutely right about Pitchfork (in reference to their review of Pens): “What fucking year is this? 1975, and we’re all studiously examing Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here for hidden messages? 1997, and we all can’t believe how clever and collegiate-smart and important Radiohead are? 2008, and we all fucking love Animal Collective because they’ve...

Cold Cave signs to Matador
It should be noted that I do like Cold Cave a lot. (And Love Comes Close is a great record!) But doesn’t it seem like Matador is just snapping up every band that plays the Todd P circuit? Also, nice to be back, etc. You can blame Ellie Clayman for it.

And we exhale and roll our eyes in unison
So what exactly is going on with the “alternative” weeklies? From what it looks like, they’ve moved on from slideshows of half-naked women and are now just showing actual porn. Well, I’m sure they’re getting a lot of hits. (Not a pun, and not a reference to “Annette’s Got the Hits,” either.) Something to be proud of! That’s the “West...

What’s interesting about this isn’t its media sucks up to the rich angle, which is all well and good. It’s that this person, who goes on and on about his “urban public school” education uses the effete UK colloquialism “whingeing,” instead of the proper urban public school term of “whining.” My, these New York upper crust types must have...
